My Story:

The Start

I worked part time as a waitress for the whole of my high school career and saved up enough money to “kick-off” my adulthood, on my own two feet. I matriculated with exemption in 1998 and started working in pension fund administration. I left to travel for a year abroad. I came back and joined a small HR consulting firm, and my then boss became my mentor. I was encouraged by him to challenge my traditional thought patterns to see the much bigger picture. I could never see the world of work the same way again J and I was spoilt for any other employer.  I challenged status quo and offered better alternatives. I offered solutions for corporate problems, which the corporates didn’t really want to solve.

Consulting and Systems

Consulting was a better fit for me, as the independence in thought was encouraged and the solutions were welcomed by clients who were paying for much needed change. HR systems were my specialty and I found myself designing the application and system specifications for HR modules that could be applied to multiple corporates in varying industries for a company called CRS Technologies. Making statutory compliance and best practice a “no-brainer”, as the procedures were built into our software program. I had mapped out the performance management modules for SABS, Training modules for Truworths and Foscor Mining, the Employment Equity reporting for Schindler Lifts and Omnicor Explosives, not to mention the Recruitment module. I worked with software developers in creating this software and it gave me insight into the technical and logical flows required in technology to make work more efficient. I was at the same time studying through UNISA to attain my degree. I traveled around South Africa to various clients providing training and consulting like Beacon, Tiger Brands and others.

Hospitality

My Husband and I moved to Sun City – The resort, not the prison! I consulted to Sun City under special HR projects. First HR Manager for the Palace of the Lost City, then Resort Performance Management – special projects,  and then Resort Recruitment before moving back to Pretoria. Sun City Resort has approximately 3500 employees.

Business Owner

Moving home to Pretoria alone with my two young boys (Aged 2 and 3 years), was a brave move. I came back with the mission to learn how to run business and took on a small delivery business delivering fast food to customers from restaurants. I bought into a franchise brand, thinking that I will learn what to do, only to learn what not to do! Within 5 years I grew the branch to be the biggest Franchisee Branch in the country. The franchise brand did not grow at the same pace and we had learned that there was a tax irregularity in the business model. I took the hard but honest route and corrected my business model, which caused unnecessary conflict with the franchise brand. Through strategy and much cost, I won my brand independence, while retaining my business.

BuzZ was born through this process. I have developed my own multi store and agent layered ecommerce software with store ordering and delivery workflows, in use currently by our clients. Unfortunately, I have needed to let go of the deliveries due to the aggressive competition with the new players in the field like Uber and Takealot (Currently in review by the competition commission) and change in the consumer market trends due to Covid, much like many other businesses. BUT, while the deliveries are “mothballed” for now, e-commerce is our reality, so BuzZ Group launched the Technology and Digital Consulting legs.

Writing this profile reminds me that the journey of each one of us is paved in such an intricate way to find us where we are now. What we perceive as “obstacles”, turn out to be the defining moments or opportunities for change.
